Northwestern Mutual Life
Northwestern Mutual Life is one of the largest real estate investors in the nation. As of December 2003, Northwestern Mutual's real estate portfolio, which includes multi-family, warehouse, office, and retail, had a book value of $21 billion with $16.6 billion invested in mortgage loans and $4.4 billion invested in real estate equity investments. Northwestern Mutual invests in real estate equities directly through acquisitions, fee developments, joint venture developments, pre-purchases, and indirectly via private opportunity funds and public real estate securities. In a pre-purchase transaction, Northwestern Mutual committed 75 percent of the equity for the development of Crescent at Carlyle with Monument Realty.
